Outcome

Not direct citizenship. Long-term residence or naturalisation may become possible only if the applicant later satisfies the separate law in force at that time.

Application channel

Formal residence procedures run through AIMA and the relevant Portuguese legal/financial processes.

Qualifying routes

Current routes to examine first.

Cultural / heritage support

Qualifying capital transfer from €250,000 for eligible cultural heritage or artistic-production support under the current legal framework.

Qualifying investment funds

€500,000 capital transfer into qualifying non-real-estate collective-investment undertakings.

Research / business / jobs

Other current routes include qualifying research investment and defined business/job-creation activities.

Family

Family reunification can be available, subject to Portuguese immigration rules and documentary requirements.

Residence / physical presence

ARI is designed around a comparatively low physical-presence requirement, with the applicable stay requirements determined by the relevant permit and renewal period.

Key considerations

Points to consider

Portugal's current ARI framework does not include the former residential-property purchase route. Any later naturalisation is a separate legal process.

Before recommending any programme, screen citizenships held, residence history, source of wealth, source of funds, PEP/sanctions exposure, prior visa or immigration refusals, criminal/regulatory issues and family eligibility.
