Overseas business

The route is designed for an overseas business establishing its UK presence, not for a UK business that is already trading.

Employment history

The worker usually needs the required prior service with the overseas employer, subject to specified exceptions.

Duration

The visa is time-limited and the route does not itself provide a direct route to ILR.

Long-term position

Settlement and citizenship

UK Expansion Worker does not itself lead directly to settlement. If long-term UK residence is the objective, any later switch into a settlement route requires a separate assessment under the rules in force at that time.
